The Green Barn
The pleasant chatter of shoppers rings brightly in the friendly atmosphere of The Green Barn, a local market in Lynden, Washington. As the fragrant aroma of sweet, ripened fruit fills the renovated country barn, customers linger to browse the wide selection of local produce and dairy. Buying local is not only environmentally friendly; it also stimulates the local economy. The Green Barn supports farmers and growers in the area by offering the community local products at affordable prices.
Lynden is an agricultural community rich in heritage and values, located in the northwestern corner of Washington state. It is a community where neighbors are still eager to help each other out and shoppers in aisles still stop and talk about the weather. The Green Barn is a local jewel that epitomizes the strong sense of community felt in Lynden.
Brothers Dave and Tim Burger have owned The Green Barn since 2005 and their passion and commitment to their community is clear. When asked how the business got started, Dave says, “A friend from church with a marketing background wanted to set up a business that would be a positive impact for the local community. He and his brother-in-law pulled together and came up with The Green Barn. They hired me on at the start in customer relations - helping customers on the sales floor, stocking, and ringing the customers up. Two years later, they both pulled out for various reasons, leaving the option to buy up to me.”
Since then, The Green Barn has made quite a name for itself in the local community. Customers flock to its location from throughout Whatcom County, bringing their families with them to enjoy the market atmosphere. Depending on the season, the Burger brothers buy their produce from approximately 60 growers within Whatcom County and have even established relationships with suppliers from nearby British Columbia, Canada as well. The Green Barn also receives specific crops like apples, pears, lettuces, and potatoes from Skagit County and Eastern Washington.
When spring starts to warm the Pacific Northwest, The Green Barn opens its big roll-up door and sets up displays outside as well. With the warmer weather comes the crowds. Lynden is known for its berries, hosting the world’s largest Raspberry Festival each July. Summers at The Green Barn mean beautiful and bountiful displays of blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, and strawberries. Then there are the colorful seasons for cherries, asparagus, peaches, apples, and pears later in the year.
In addition to produce, The Green Barn carries fresh and local dairy products from nearby Edaleen Dairy, Twinbrook Creamery, Breckenridge Farm, and Appel Farms. Their products range from decadent cheeses and sweet cream butter to fresh milk in charming glass bottles. In addition to their dairy selections, they offer farm-fresh cage-free eggs, local honey, and fresh-baked bread from the Lynden Dutch Bakery. There are bins filled with enticing selections of whole-grain pastas, flours, oatmeal, soup mixes, dried fruits, and nuts. From old-fashioned clodhoppers to chocolate-covered pomegranates, The Green Barn has something for everyone.
When asked about future goals, Dave says, “We see this location as temporary, so our short term goal is to move to a better location within Lynden to be able to really settle down, and offer the best we can competitively in quality, price, and location. Long term, we hope to add other retail markets within Whatcom County, using the same model, which is a country market with a small town feel.”
Because of its small-town atmosphere, The Green Barn has become a symbol of the local community. A friendly smile is never hard to find in Lynden, Washington, but The Green Barn is distinct in its ability to combine local products with local charm.
My kids and I love shopping at The Green Barn! I've found that my son eats more vegetables when he understands where they've come from and when he takes part in picking them out. He's always so excited for our weekly trip to The Green Barn and I'm always excited to feed my children fresh and healthy food!
